The date that Joomla 1.0 will be officially discontinued is July 22, 2009, less than 9 months away.
What this announcement means for all current Joomla! 1.0 web site owners out there is that there will not be another Joomla! 1.0 release unless there is a massive security flaw.
Another consequence is that most Joomla extension, module and template software companies will start to wind down supporting Joomla! 1.0 and concentrate on releasing only to the Joomla! 1.5.x platform.
One such announcement was recently announced by Azrul.com, the creators of JomComment and MyBlog; and many more are sure to follow as it is too time consuming to maintain both native Joomla! 1.0 and Joomla! 1.5 versions of each software or template released.
However, if you are perfectly happy with your current site running Joomla! 1.0, you can certainly keep it like that forever, it will not go buggy or bad over time.
On the other hand, if you are considering launching a new web site, we highly recommend that you go with the Joomla! 1.5 platform for future compatibility and expandability.
Upgrading from Joomla! 1.0 to Joomla! 1.5 is not a small matter, if you are not comfortable doing it yourself and to minimize downtime while migrating, we would suggest that you look for professional help to guide you through this.
